Lifting

What are you training for and how do you stay motivated?

I get asked these questions a lot and the answer is I’m not training for anything specific. The gym is like therapy after a long day. Most of the work I do is all mental so working out is my time for myself to get some energy out while I listen to podcasts and music and test myself to see how strong I can be in the process. And how do I stay motivated? The truth is I’m not always motivated but I’ve disciplined myself to show up week after week regardless of how I feel because I know the results will be worth it. And one of the biggest obstacles I’ve had to overcome to stay motivated is not comparing myself to other people both while I work out and in general. Everyone has done this at one point or another and as they say “comparison is the thief of joy” and it’s true. It’s not about being better than other people, it’s about being better than the person I was yesterday. And that mindset is applicable to any of life’s endeavors.

“No man has the right to be an amateur in the matter of physical training. It is a shame for a man to grow old without seeing the beauty and strength of which his body is capable.” – Socrates
